When we first started out, a very logical business partner saw our hand-labeled jars, cringed slightly, and urged us to buy an automated label applicator. It would have made every jar identical, sleek, and factory-perfect. But it also would have meant the very hands that carefully package our bottles, earning a real living wage (of $18 to $22 an hour), could no longer be able to feed their families.
After lengthy discussions, we realized something vital: automating away the people to chase visual perfection meant losing our soul. We chose the people.
